Meet Xavier, a very special Bull Terrier who has reminded us just how much can be achieved with patience, understanding and a little bit of peanut butter… or whatever your favourite snack happens to be!
When Xavier was diagnosed with diabetes, his outlook wasn’t great. He had other underlying health issues, and managing his diabetes meant regular handling, examinations and insulin injections. The problem? Xavier is a very suspicious boy who really doesn’t appreciate needles, medications or vets taking too much of an interest in him!
His owner, who has loved Xavier since he was a puppy, was facing the heartbreaking possibility of saying goodbye. She knew how much ongoing treatment would be required, and she was worried that the stress of managing his condition might be too much for her anxious boy.
That’s when Dr Lloyd and Matt came to meet Xavier.
Rather than rushing straight into treatment, we took the time to get to know him, build trust and work out a plan together with his owner. We believed there might be a way forward if we could help Xavier feel safer and more comfortable with the things he found frightening.
We worked slowly, using positive reinforcement, plenty of patience, distractions and his favourite snacks. Gradually, Xavier began to trust us a little more. Over the following weeks, we helped him become comfortable with the clippers so we could fit a continuous glucose monitor. This gave us valuable information about his blood glucose levels and helped us identify the best approach and timing for his treatment.
Meanwhile, his owner worked incredibly hard at home, gradually helping Xavier accept his insulin injections and carefully adjusting his diet and feeding routine to support his diabetes and other health conditions.
**Fast forward just over a year, and Xavier is doing well!**
The owner who once feared she might have to say goodbye now has her much-loved boy happy, comfortable and managing his health conditions well.
She has worked tirelessly for Xavier, incorporating carefully chosen natural foods and complementary products alongside his prescribed treatment, with his progress guided by his veterinary care.
For us, this is what being a mobile vet is all about. It’s not simply about diagnosing a condition or prescribing medication. It’s about understanding the individual animal, respecting their fears, supporting their family and finding a practical way forward that gives everyone the best possible chance.
Xavier is now 10 years old, and both his owner’s heart and ours are singing with happiness at the extra time they have shared together.
Sometimes, the biggest difference comes from slowing down, building trust and never giving up on finding another way.
**Here’s to Xavier, his amazing owner, and many more happy days together!**
